Without the efforts of these dedicated mountaineers the scenic passage through Duncan Canyon would still be closed due to a devastating forest fire that swept through the area in the summer of 2001. After 4 years of rerouting the race along easier  access roads some 14 miles of the historically tougher trail was reopened for the 2006 event.
